Art

I have not been posting much lately, but that doesn't mean I have not been busy. Actually, busy is the word at the moment. There have been a lot of photography-projects and assignments going on recently and some exciting stuff coming up.

For one I am preparing a photography course in the south of France in May. There is still room for four participants if anyone is interested. Check out the website www.chez-castillon.com and this link for more information.

I am also working on organizing photography workshops this year for a small group of photographers. The first on the list is with smoke, fireworks and a model and the second will be with professional (ballet) dancers. All in/around Utrecht.

And there is more.

Today Art paid me a visit. Art does a lot of (fashion)model work and he wanted me to do some out-of-the-box photography with him. This is one of the results. The pose and lighting is inspired by a beautiful painting I saw a few months ago.

Yellow

The next result of an "out-of-the-blue" photoshoot last Friday in Utrecht. See my previous post here.

About two weeks ago I was cycling through my home town of Utrecht, when my eye caught sight of this amazing yellow Chesterfield couch standing in an office. I immediately got off my bike and went inside to ask if I might do a photoshoot with a model on the Chesterfield. The people at the company (www.pathe-thuis.nl) were very welcoming and friendly. After some explanation of my intentions the owner gave me permission to do the shoot.

Next I needed a model and immediately thought of Bente; we had been talking of doing a photoshoot together for a long time already and this seemed to be the right time to do it.

My good friend Wim Blom was so kind to be assistant to the shoot.

Here is one of the first results.

Feeling blue

I did an "out-of-the-blue" photoshoot yesterday in Utrecht.

Tattoo U

I am always keen to work on new ideas and concepts.

This is an idea I have been brooding on for a time and here is a first experiment. It is not quite there yet where I want it but I think it is already quite presentable.

Let's call it temporary tattooing or virtual bodypainting. This is not achieved by photoshop but the real thing! And no, it is not a tattoo. Things you can do with a light source....

Thank you to my model Michiel van Ieperen, who actually came along for a Mad Max-inspired photoshoot, but we started off on a whim trying out this idea.

Johan - test shot

This is one of the results of testshots during the photoshoot with Johan a week ago. (See my post of October 10th.) Looking for the best light for the smoke-collar-project.

I wanted to take a photograph in old classic style and I wanted the model to 'wear' a medieval collar. But not a regular collar made of fabric, but one made of smoke. I found a way to more or less control rings of smoke. The difficult part was to take a photograph at the exact right moment when the ring of smoke is around the neck of the model.

Thanks to model Johan Bos. Thanks also to my friend Wim Blom as assistent (billowing the smoke around the room.) And thanks to my friends Geert-Jan and Jaap for letting me use their living room for the photoshoot, as I needed a room high enough to let the smoke come down from above the model.

Miriam

From a cool photoshoot with fashionmodel Michiel van Ieperen and Miriam Czakon.  The photoshoot was intended as a cross-over between fashion and 'arty'-storytelling. Some pictures will be available soon. At the end of the photoshoot I suggested to do a couple of portraits with Rembrandt-style lighting. This is one of the nice ones of Miriam.

I am open to all kinds of photography assignments and opportunities. Interested in a photoshoot or know someone who is and you like my work: you can contact me through jos@jkimages.nl

Michiel

I am just back from holiday and already a lot of work and exciting projects going on. So hardly any time to focus on some of the cool pictures I took on Bali, Indonesia. But, don't worry, I will be posting some of the best shots of Bali very soon.

Crescendo

Another result from a photoshoot with dancer Sjoerd Wijn.

A special thank you for Theater De Kom in Nieuwegein for letting us use their dance-studio.

Dust to dust

I have some new powder-shoot images to show you.

Yesterday I did a photoshoot with dancer Sjoerd Wijn. The idea was to elaborate some more on the theme of powder and we came up with some beautiful images. See below for a detail of this photo.

It's beginning to get to me

Improvising in between the video-takes. A picture I took of performer Paola Ghidini during our filming-session to get shots for a new video on the design of italian designer Corradino Garofalo. Paola is 'wearing'  a shiny metal collar made from the flexible objects Corradino Garofalo designed.

In this shot I only used natural daylight.

The video and pictures were taken at De Stilte in Breda and is now in post-production.

It's obvious, once I stop to think

The title is a quote from the movie "Ex machina", a masterful story about a possible (inevitable?) next step in evolution on this planet: robots with artificial intelligence. I consider this movie a must see; very intriguing.

A shot of Paolo Yao Kouadio during our video-/photoshoot using italian designer Corradino Garofalo's  hi-tech silvery and shining mask-objects. A shoot done at De Stilte in Breda together with Paola Ghidini.

The day we saved the world

Sleight of hand

This is a shot of Paolo Yao Kouadio taken in between sessions of filming to get material for a new video. Once more the shiny metallic masks of italian designer Corradino Garofalo was subject matter and the talented performers Paola Ghidini and Paolo Yao Kouadio were so kind to interpret moods in movements. The video and pictures were taken at De Stilte in Breda and is now in post-production.

Remake

This weekend I did a great video/photoshoot with dancer Paolo Yao Kouadio. I will present the video here as soon as the editing is finished.

One of the images I had in mind is actually a remake of a picture I made together with Tomas. See below. I wanted to recreate the image replacing the bleached hair / light skin model with a bleached hair / dark skin model. You can compare the result with the initial picture below.

Cutting edge

A quick portrait shot of my good friend Mario Mulder.  When I caught a glimpse of his taped shoulder due to an injury, I thought it would be a cool part of a picture like this. Mario is going through a rough spot in his life, so I guess this strong portrait portrays his resilience and dedication to come out of it a stronger person.
