Sunday stroll

This is streetphotography as I like it: when everything falls in to their right place in a picture.

A sunny day in Venice, Italy. It had rained the night before, but the street is slowly drying in the winter sun. I was concentrating on a nice composition of the shadow the lamp post made along the street and over the wall. When along came 'the missing link' and in an instant I knew I needed to have the man in the picture too. I got one shot to get the picture right.....

Usually I am not for pictures where 'the horizon' is not straight, but here I think it adds to the image with all the other lines, straight and angled, playing their part in the whole.

Rock the boat

A lonesome gondola waiting for the tourist-season. No cars in the city of Venice, Italy. The boat is the way to go. Or your feet.

In the month of January the city is quite calm and quite devoid of tourists. Temperatures are low, however above freezing mostly. And foggy conditions are possible. In other words wonderful weather conditions for interesting photography. On top of that prices are low too. Prices are already on the rise at the moment as the city is 'waking up'. Reasons for me to offer a two-day photography workshop in Venice in the winter 2015/16. Check out my webpage for more information.

Go-Freestyle

Before I continue with some cool pictures I took in Venice, I thought I'd throw in a picture I made for an exciting group of 'freestylers', aptly called "Go-Freestyle".  Check out their website or their facebookpage.

Find your mooring

Venice, Italy, like you've never seen before, I suppose. This is my take on views of the lagoon surrounding the city.

One of the advantages of getting up before dawn in Venice; getting wonderful pictures of breathing peace and tranquility out in the lagoon. The other advantage is the sublime soft light of dawn. This is another image in a series of abstracts I made during an intensive four days photography-trip to Venice, Italy.

This image is of guidance poles in the water for all the boats that move around on the lagoon. Attached to the poles is, what I would guess is a weatherstation of some sorts. Another long exposure.

My next post, I promise, will have some gondola's in the picture........ Finally......

This image is, as are my previous posts, of fishing nets resting on a construction of poles standing in the middle of the lagoon that surrounds Venice. A perfect subject for a long exposure.

Venice like you've never seen before, I suppose.

A second image in a series of abstracts I made during an intensive four days photography-trip to Venice, Italy. An amazing, amazing city with loads of (obvious) photo-opportunities, but also loads of unconventional ways of depicting this ancient city and its surroundings.

This image is, as was my previous post,  of fishing nets resting on a construction of poles standing in the middle of the lagoon that surrounds Venice. Perfect subject for a long exposure.

Venice like you've never seen before, I suppose.

I have just returned from four days of photography in Venice, Italy. I love my job. It takes me to the most wonderful places and I get to meet the most amazing people. And I am lucky to get the opportunity to go to Venice  for work. Four days of intense  photography in perhaps my favorite city in the world.

Hamza

Hamza, a man with many faces. Another result from the photoshoot I had with Hamza Gaderi a few days ago. My aim in this shot was to create a mysterious look resulting in an image that you could expect as the cover of a book or perhaps the poster for a movie. All we did was wrap a dark shawl around Hamza's  head. Some post-production in Photoshop in this shot to pinpoint the mood I was looking for.

Hamza is a very talented calligrapher based in Utrecht. You can check out his work on his facebookpage. You may contact him directly or through me if you would like some calligraphy done....

Hamza

Another picture I took of Hamza. (See the previous post on my blog).

I met Hamza in april 2014 when I was working on my 1000-faces project. (In this project I approach total strangers on the street and ask them if I may take their portrait. The project is a bit 'on hold' at the moment, but I could pick it up again any day. Still many many faces to go.....)

Hamza and I have stayed in touch and agreed to do a photoshoot together. This is one of the results.

Keep and castle

My final post for this year. It's a wrap!

Thanks to everyone who has stayed in touch and is following the progression of my work over time. I hope to create wonderful pictures in the year to come. I have many plans and projects going, so I perhaps I can give you some more pleasant surprises in 2015.

This is a long exposure (abut 30 seconds) I took at the fortress of El Essaouira in Morocco, earlier this month.

Take care, all! :-)

Tomas

Another result from my photoshoot with Tomas. My aim was to create images with classical light resembling old paintings. I paid much attention to light and posing. In this picture, although you might not think so at first glance, the hands play a very important role.

Have a look at my previous post.

Persephono

Inspired by a painting (Persephone) by Dante Gabriel Rosetti, I did a photoshoot with model Tomas.

The aim was not to copy the image at all but, using classic lighting, to create the feel of a classic painting.

What's up? (The cistern: II)

Solitary confinement in an ancient cistern where the floor is covered with a layer of water can play tricks on your mind.......

Another image from this magnificent building in the old part of El Jadida, Morocco.

This picture, as many of my other pictures, is available in print. If you are interested, you may send me a message

The cistern

In the heart of the old fort of El Jadida, Morocco is an ancient building erected by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Originally designed as an arsenal, it was later converted into a cistern. Today a  thin layer of water is maintained on the floor of the cistern to create the wonderful reflections and play of light.
